First CH3D detection in Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs: constraints on CH4 abundances

چکیده

ABSTRACT We report the first detection in JK = 10–00 rotational transition line of CH3D towards three Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) from IRAM 30-m observations. Assuming a temperature 25 K, abundances (relative to H2) are range (2.3–14.5) × 10−7. The CH4 derived and assuming DCO+/HCO+ ratios (0.05–4.8) 10−5. gas-phase formation via CH2D+ is enhanced at high densities 108–1010 cm−3 our observations likely probing innermost dense warm regions proto-BDs. Thermal and/or non-thermal desorption can return molecules formed an early stage on grain surfaces gas-phase. indicative carbon-chain chemistry proto-BDs where synthesized lukewarm (∼20–30 K) region close central source.

Radio Constraints on Activity in Young Brown Dwarfs

We report on searches for radio emission from three of the nearest known young brown dwarfs using the Very Large Array. We have obtained sensitive upper limits on 3.6cm emission from 2MASSW J1207334-393254, TWA 5B and SSSPM J1102-3431, all of which are likely members of the ∼8-Myr-old TW Hydrae association. We derive constraints on the magnetic field strength and the number density of accelerat...

The Formation of Low-Mass Protostars and Proto-Brown Dwarfs

The formation of low-mass protostars and especially of brown dwarfs currently are “hot topics” in cool star research. The talks contributed to this splinter session discussed how low in mass and how low in luminosity objects might exist, if these substellar objects show evidence for circum(sub)stellar disks, and how the bottom of the mass function in young clusters after the formation process l...

Lithium abundances in halo dwarfs

The pioneering observations of Spite & Spite showed lithium abundances in halo dwarfs to be almost uniform, irrespective of metallicity and mass over a range of effective temperatures from ∼5600 K up to the main-sequence turnoff. They inferred that the observed abundance was “hardly altered” from that produced in the hot Big Bang. Subsequent efforts have endeavoured to determine how small or la...

The density of methane brown dwarfs: observational and theoretical constraints

Methane brown dwarfs (CH4BDs), i.e. objects similar to the low mass star Gliese 229B, are characterized by very unusual colours: J–K<∼0 and I–J>∼5. An analysis of the ESO public images, which cover an area of 37 sq. arcmin in the three filters, yields one clear CH4BD candidate with J=20.2 and two fainter sources with J≃23. The resulting observed density of methane dwarfs ranges from ≈100 to ≈50...

Convection in brown dwarfs

We briefly review the crucial effect that convection plays in the evolution, interior and atmospheric physics of brown dwarfs. In particular, we discuss: (1) the role of convection in the interior structure and evolution of brown dwarfs (BDs); (2) the importance of convection in the atmospheres of ultra-cool objects, at both high and low gravities (i.e., in both young and old BDs); and (3) the ...
